You Don’t Want a Web Development Company That Thinks About Computers

Boom Creative Develops Digital Experiences by Thinking About Your Users and Your Brand

The Web is growing at an astonishing pace. According to Forrester Research, the number of adults in the United States who access the Internet on a daily basis has grown from 78% in 2011 to 84% in 2012. Google is now running over 1 million servers in data centers around the world and processes over one billion search requests every day. People are not just viewing web content, they are creating it: Google scans over 24 petabytes of user-generated content every 24 hours.

Don’t Overlook Other Aspects of the New Digital World

We are living in an era known as the age of the Splinternet. The “Internet” as we know it is splintering into new types of devices and into new types of experiences. Recently Forrester noted that nearly half of the adults in the US own a smart phone and just under a fifth own a tablet. On Christmas Day 2012 more iPhones, iPads, Galaxy devices, Kindle Fires and other mobile devices were activated than on any other day in history, according to a report from Flurry Analytics. How many? 17.4 million.

Even more surprising, 43% of consumers have access to the web through gaming consoles, set top boxes and web-enabled televisions.

What is really scary is that most brands need to fix real, everyday problems on their traditional web site before even thinking about this new reality.

The Web Games You Didn’t Even Know You Were Losing

Bounce Rate – Bounce rate is a simple measure of the number of people who look at a single page of your site and leave. Many sites find that their bounce rate is 25% or more. Think about that: one in four users simply leaves your site.

Browser Compatibility – How does your site look in Chrome or Safari? Most companies have never looked.

Email on Mobile Devices – Currently more than 40% of all emails are opened on a mobile device, and what a person experiences on an iPhone is different than what a person experiences on an Android device.

User Experience on Smart Phones and Tablets – Web sites do not work the same on a tablet as they do on a desktop computer. Consider this: you can hover your mouse over a link on a web site on a desktop, but you can’t do that on a touch screen tablet.

Shopping Cart Abandonment – Two recent studies by leading research firms have shown how bad shopping cart abandonment can be. In 2012 Coremetrics/IBM pegged typical shopping cart abandonment at 61.85%. Fireclick/DigitalRiver estimated the number to be 74.76%

Search Engine Performance – In recent months Google has added shopping results, image results and videos to the first page of its search results. Being a top ten result previously got you on the first page. Now you need to shoot for the top three.
